Program Officer – Nature Tanzania

Arusha – Fulltime Position

Nature Tanzania wishes to recruit a competent individual for the position of Program Officer to support strategic implementation of its mission and vision, specifically leading the pragmatic work of the organisation.

 

1. Introduction

Nature Tanzania is a national conservation Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with interests in biodiversity conservation, community empowerment and engagement. The mission of the organization is to conserve and restore key biodiversity habitats that are identified as Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) in Tanzania for the benefit of the present and future generations.

3.  Location and place of work

The normal place of work (duty station) for this position will be Arusha, Tanzania. There will be frequent national travels and occasional international travel.

4. Roles and Responsibilities

4.1 Main responsibility:
The main responsibility of the individual will be to support the strategic delivery of the organization’s mission and vision and specifically to lead the design, recruitment, implementation and monitoring of Nature Tanzania‘s program and projects.

4.2 Leadership and membership:

  • Ensuring that the vision and mission of the organization are effectively and efficiently delivered as per established timelines and work plans;
  • Support and channel inputs of consultants, government agencies, stakeholders, donors and the general public into the organization’s program’s work plans and budgets;
  • Provide strong leadership and people-management experience including supervision of staff, consultants and coordination of programme/projects teams in a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Support recruitment and engagement of members and partners.

4.3 Program Implementation, Coordination and Evaluation:

  • Primarily, support the AfriEvolve Project and link with other partners in East and West Africa by synthesizing information and issues relevant to the work of the Program;
  • Support and facilitate project operations planning, monitoring and learning;
  • Prepare and submit technical reports on time and following agreed formats and standards; 
  • Provide technical assistance to relevant partners and colleagues to ensure timely achievement of targets, results and deliverables is on time;
  • Support implementation of related projects to identify synergies and emerging issues to inform program and project development;
  • Develop and implement best practices to improve overall program performance at Nature Tanzania.

4.4 Fundraising and resource mobilization:

  • A key member of the fundraising team;
  • Support and initiate fundraising, advocacy and policy for the growth of the organization;
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for Program and Project development in line with Nature Tanzania’s business plan and strategy;
  • Support the preparation of the program’s budget.

4.5 Partnership development

  • Assist in identifying opportunities for Program and Project development in line with Nature Tanzania’s Business Plan and Strategy;
  • Work closely with BirdLife International and its partners in delivering already existing programs and projects in Tanzania;
  • Support in forging partnerships with potential partners through MoU and support implementation of the signed MoU.

4.6 Communication roles:

  • Manage and produce program content on the website and social media as needed;
  • Plan and conduct travel and other outreach activities to enhance and sustain existing and future networks with potential partners;
  • Manage communication and lesson sharing with key AfriEvolve project partners including Nature Kenya – Kenya, Nature Uganda – Uganda, SOS Forêts – Côte d’Ivoire, Fondation NATURAMA – Burkina Faso and Ghana Wildlife Society (GWS) – Ghana;
  • Support development and sharing of Nature Tanzania’s quarterly newsletter, Kolokolo.

4.7 Other responsibilities:

  • Respond to other roles as they will be assigned by the Line Manager.

5. Qualification and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, including forestry, natural resources management, biodiversity conservation, community development, environmental policy and management or related fields;
  • A Master of Science degree or equivalent qualification on the above will be an added advantage;
  • At least 3 years of demonstrable experience working in the field of natural resources management and/or project management;
  • Practical experience of implementing conservation projects in Tanzania with good networks and relationships within relevant government departments, a definite advantage;
  • Proven experience in fundraising and resource mobilization;
  • Fluency in English and Swahili, both written and verbal;
  • A strong delivery-oriented work ethic with the ability to meet challenging timelines;
  • Computer literacy in relation to Microsoft Office applications (word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint) and the use of the internet and online communication tools;
  • Ability to coordinate and manage teams and think strategically about implementation within given budgets and timelines;
  • Be proactive in seeking and delivering innovative solutions and technical information to relevant partners and colleagues;
  • Ability to develop appropriate communication materials for the internal and external audiences including writing quality technical reports;
  • Ability to design and conduct studies, analyze information and write reports;
  • Have a positive attitude of getting things done and be a resourceful individual who can energize and motivate field teams;
  • A self-starter person capable of working under limited supervision;
  • This position is preferably for Tanzanians.

6. Salary and benefits:
Commensurate with experience and qualifications and in accordance with Nature Tanzania terms and conditions.

  • Length/duration of this contract: 34 months.
  • Working hours – Full time, 40 hours per week
  • Date when the job expected to start: 17th May 2021
